Jeffrey Zegas, Founding Principal

Jeffrey M. Zegas, Principal, has been involved in executive search since 1979. Since co-founding ZurickDavis, an executive search firm, in 1986 his search focus has been almost exclusively on health care. He has served clients in almost all aspects of the health care delivery arena.

Jeff holds a BA from the City University of New York and an MA in psychology and an MBA from Boston University. He spent five years on the Board and Executive Committee of Jewish Memorial Hospital and Rehabilitation Center. He is President of The Gateway Group (a health care speakers’ forum: www.thegatewaygroup.org) and founded the ZurickDavis Advisory Board. He is active in many health care professional organizations.

Previous to his involvement in search, Jeff taught both business and psychology at BU’s School of Management and College of Liberal Arts. His early career was in social science, and he has published in the Journal of Creative Behavior.

Being very active in the community, Jeff is a former Big Brother and sits on the Board of Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Massachusetts Bay. He is an original Board member of the Big Brother/Big Sister Foundation and serves on the Boards of Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts and Samaritans of Greater Boston. He is a founding member of Temple Shir Tikvah in Winchester, Mass., where he resides with his wife and two sons.

Myranne Janoff, Principal

Myranne Janoff, Principal, has over 20 years’ experience as a health care executive and entrepreneur. Her experience has been in leading such diverse enterprises as a clinical laboratory, a large academic group practice, an entrepreneurial health care clinic, and an e-health care business venture, which uniquely qualifies her to help our clients find, select, and attract candidates for leadership positions.

Myranne (pronounced my-RAN) holds her undergraduate degree from Elizabethtown College and an MBA from Northeastern University. She began her health care career as a Medical Technologist in Atlantic City, N.J., and Philadelphia, PA. After moving to New England, she founded a successful clinical laboratory, which she eventually sold to a national company. Subsequently, Myranne became the Associate Administrator of the Brigham Surgical Group. Additionally, she co-founded a venture-backed start-up utilizing innovative therapies for disease management and has consulted for several start-up health care companies. In addition to her role at ZDmd, Myranne has been a principal of ZurickDavis since 2000.

Among the various professional and community organizations Myranne has belonged to over the last several years are the Medical Group Management Association, the Massachusetts Association of Health Plans, and the ACHE. She serves on several boards in the community of Marblehead, MA., where she lives with her husband.

Stephen Blattner, MD, MBA, Principal

Stephen Blattner, MD, MBA, Principal, has over 25 years of health care experience as a clinician, organizational leader, and health care consultant. Dr. Blattner’s work is currently focused exclusively on enhancing the effectiveness of physician leaders and leadership structures in health care organizations.

A pediatric hematologist-oncologist by training, Dr. Blattner practiced subspecialty medicine from 1981 to 1994. During that period, he co-founded and served as the first CEO and Medical Director of the Maine Children’s Cancer Program, in Portland, Maine, and was affiliated with the Pediatric Oncology Group and the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. Also during that period, he held hospital divisional- and departmental-level planning and leadership positions at Maine Medical Center, a 600-bed tertiary community teaching hospital in Portland, Maine.

Since 1994, Dr. Blattner has been a health care management consultant. Initially in independent practice, he was employed as a senior consultant at two national firms (Northland Health Group/Stroudwater Associates from 1998 to 2003 and The Bard Group from 2003 to 2007). Dr. Blattner is the founding Principal of exãgoMD, a healthcare advisory, coaching, and consulting practice focused on improving the effectiveness of physician and executive leadership. He affiliated with ZDmd in 2008.

Dr. Blattner’s consulting clients have included academic medical centers (Jefferson University and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center), large community teaching hospitals and health systems (Maimonides Medical Center, Geisinger Health System, Carolinas Health System, and Tucson Medical Center), regional hospitals and health systems (MidCoast Health System in Maine and Sts. Mary and Elizabeth Hospital in Tennessee), and large medical groups (Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, Yale University Health Services, and Permanente Medical Group). He also has experience consulting to industry (Liberty Mutual Group); managed care organizations (Blue Cross Blue Shield of Maine, Health Partners of Philadelphia, Maine Heart Center); and rural health and government agencies in Maine, Pennsylvania, Kansas, and Hawaii.

Dr. Blattner is a graduate of Cornell University (AB 1971), SUNY at Buffalo School of Medicine (MD 1977), and SUNY at Buffalo Graduate School (MS 1974). He completed his MBA (1998) at Boston University School of Management. His residency and fellowship training were at the Maine Medical Center and University of Rochester/Strong Memorial Hospital, respectively.

PJ Layng, Senior Associate and Principal of Florida Office

PJ Layng, Principal, has been in the search industry since 1979. Much of her career has been focused on conducting searches for physicians and physician leaders, and recruiting physician executives is her sole focus at ZDmd. Previously, she created and implemented physician recruitment and retention programs in major health care systems throughout the country. She also has experience recruiting senior executives to private industry and the nonprofit sector. PJ earned a BA in speech communication and did master’s work in the field of nonprofit management and organizational development at The George Washington University. She is active on several community boards, including that of the Outer Cape Health Center.

Julie Phillips, Research Associate

Julie Phillips, Research Associate, holds a BA from Youngstown State University and an MS from Columbia Southern University. Following a 16-year career in human resources, Julie has specialized in physician and physician executive recruitment with ZurickDavis/ZDmd since 2005. Previously she did the same for an academic medical center in the Midwest and for the Fallon Clinic in Worcester, MA. She and her husband, Dave, live near Buffalo, N.Y., and enjoy their Rhodesian Ridgeback, the New York Yankees, reading, and traveling.
